THE JOINT - THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY’S 2016 DREAM UP FESTIVAL
“…THE JOINT HAS ALL THE UNDERPINNINGS OF SUCCESS AS IT MOVES FORWARD.”
David Roberts, Theater Reviews Limited
The Joint is an original musical about a community of people finding love and redemption with rousing rhythm and blues music and dance as the supporting characters. It’s 1968 in a small rural town in South Carolina where the Joint, an old, run-down juke joint, sits at the heart of a changing neighborhood, serving as both a hard-drinking sensual dive and prayer-filled sacred sanctuary. The Joint is the story of three generations of women striving to live their dreams at great costs. Feisty Queen, entrepreneur and community leader wanting more; sister-friend Evelyn, whose struggle to have a career and her family on her terms ends in her death; and daughter Corrida, inheriting her mother’s talent and guts while raised by her father Melvin. A series of events which have cast a shadow over the Joint and its inhabitants. Corrida returns home after a failed attempt at pursuing her dreams looking for salvation, but becomes the catalyst for healing and rejuvenation.
The Joint is about holding on and letting go. It’s a proposal that may never come and risks taken. The Joint is about heart; having, opening, healing and guarding it. Conceived and produced by Denise Gray, it is dedicated to every mother who may not have had the strength to live, but wanted better for the daughter she left behind.

“My mother taught me to be kind, thoughtful of others and to respect the gift that I was given because God chose me and to forever honor that. Ah. Showbiz!!!”
